Terms of Use

Last updated: August 4, 2026

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the LightDrop app and this website. By downloading or using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

1. License and the Apple EULA

LightDrop is licensed, not sold, to you. Unless we provide a separate custom agreement, your license to use the app is governed by Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). These Terms supplement that agreement. If there is any conflict between these Terms and the Apple Standard EULA regarding the licensed application, the Apple Standard EULA governs for that subject.

2. Subscriptions and purchases

LightDrop is free to send and receive in standard mode. Pro — turbo transfer and password encryption — is available through the following options, purchased via Apple's In-App Purchase:

  • Monthly subscription. An auto-renewable subscription billed each month through your Apple Account. It renews automatically at the then-current price until you cancel.
  • Lifetime. A one-time purchase that unlocks Pro with no recurring charge and no renewal.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. For the monthly plan, your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period, unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours beforehand. You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account settings; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Both options support Family Sharing. Prices are set per storefront and may vary by region; applicable taxes may apply.

Both options are a Universal Purchase: iPhone, iPad, and Mac share a single transaction, so buying Pro once unlocks it on every device signed in to the same Apple Account.

Purchases and refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store terms. We cannot directly issue refunds for App Store purchases; refund requests are managed through Apple.

3. Free trial

The monthly subscription begins with a 7-day free trial for anyone who has not used it before. Eligibility is determined by Apple, not by us.

The trial converts into a paid subscription. At the end of the 7 days your Apple Account is charged the monthly price and the subscription renews each month, unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the trial ends. You can do that from the moment you start the trial, in your Apple Account settings, and you keep Pro for the rest of the free period.

If the subscription ends, standard-mode sending and receiving keep working exactly as before. Files you already transferred are yours and are unaffected — nothing you received is locked or taken away.

4. Early access period

During the early access period, Pro features are unlocked for everyone at no charge until 31 December 2026, with nothing to buy and nothing to redeem. This is a grant of access, not a purchase: it creates no entitlement, it ends on the date above, and it may be shortened or extended at our discretion. Buying Pro during this period is entirely optional, and a purchase you do make is unaffected when the period ends.

5. Your content and responsibilities

You retain all rights to the files you send and receive. We claim no ownership over your content and, as described in our Privacy Policy, we never receive it.

You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to transfer the content you send, for the security of the room you send it in, and for complying with the laws and workplace policies that apply to you. A transfer is visible to anyone who can see the sending screen; if that matters, use the password option.

We cannot recover an encrypted transfer. Passwords are used on your device and never sent to us. If a password is lost, the data cannot be decrypted by us or by anyone else. Keep your own copy of anything important — a transfer is a copy in motion, not a backup.

6. What an optical transfer can and cannot promise

LightDrop sends data as light, so its speed and reliability depend on physical conditions we do not control: the size and brightness of the sending screen, the quality of the receiving camera, the distance and angle between them, ambient light, and how steadily the device is held.

  • Throughput figures we publish are measurements taken under good conditions, not guarantees. Your results will differ.
  • Large files take real time. The app estimates the duration before a transfer starts so the decision is yours to make.
  • A transfer can fail or be interrupted — a screen sleeps, a camera loses focus, someone walks between the devices. Verify that a received file opens as expected before relying on it or deleting the original.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the app to transfer content that is unlawful, or to use it in any way that violates applicable law or the rights of others. In particular, do not use LightDrop to move data out of a system you are not authorised to remove data from — an air gap is often a rule as well as a fact. You agree not to reverse engineer, tamper with, or attempt to circumvent the security or licensing of the app, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by applicable law.

8. Disclaimer of warranties

The app is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, to the maximum extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, that any particular transfer will succeed, or that it will meet your requirements.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data or content, arising out of or related to your use of the app. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

10. Termination

These Terms apply while you use the app. You may stop using the app and delete it at any time. The sections that by their nature should survive termination — including content ownership, disclaimers, and limitations of liability — will continue to apply.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and post the new version here. Your continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
